Mission

At Young Adults with Epilepsy (YAWE), our mission is to foster resilience and independence in young adults with epilepsy. Through education, empowerment, and sustained support, we aim to transform lives by facilitating access to resources, promoting awareness, and creating a nurturing community that embraces diversity and inclusivity.

Organization Description:

At  Young Adults with Epilepsy (YAWE) we are attempting to revolutionize epilepsy and mental health care for young adults, promoting optimal health outcomes and quality of life. We aspire to dismantle the stigma surrounding epilepsy, fostering a secure and open YAWE community where acceptance thrives and individuals feel safe to share their experiences and learn from others. As an organization we host peer support groups 5 times a week and monthly workshops. Our peer support groups are run by PACES certified team members as well as special workshops once a month. Some of the workshops we have hosted include: “Dating and Epilepsy” and “Independence and Autonomy”.

Testimonies:

Testemonies

Finding people who understand, care, and resonate with you, is amazing. I have even made friends from the group that I have met in real life.”

“I was diagnosed at 21, and at first, I felt incredibly isolated and alone. I was craving connection—someone who just gets it. While searching for support, I came across Young Adults with Epilepsy and decided to join their support group and Discord community. It’s been incredibly helpful in finding a positive, understanding space during a time when I really needed it.”

The Peer Support leaders are very attentive, and provide a supportive environment for everyone involved in the group. If one person has had a stressful week, they are sure to listen to them, and are always willing to help out. I have felt very supported by them and I feel more confident now that I have a sounding board and a few peers to turn to when things get tough. These workshops are some of the highlights of my week.”

“I really like it. I look forward to it every week, and I wish we had more time!”

“Prior to finding this group, I only knew one person around my age with epilepsy and we barely talked about our experiences. It is refreshing to know that I’m definitely not alone. It’s nice to hear different perspectives and experiences from other people who have the same condition. And Abby is wonderful!”

“I’d never met anyone else with epilepsy before YAWE. Now I’m part of a community that makes me feel seen and supported.
